Dive Site Details:

Vivian Quarry, Llanberis

Vivian is cold, dark and atmospheric.

An abandoned slate quarry, this site is in the lower level of the enormous slate workings in Llanberis.  The kitting up areas provide stunning views up Pen y Pass and Snowden itself before you walk under a massive slate-built arch into the site itself.

The diving is dramatic as the sides of the quarry are vertical on three sides straight down to the bottom at 17 metres.  There is a choice of entries: down a flight of steps to a platform and then a stride in; down another flight of steps into a giant metal cage where you can stand in the water to kit up before swimming out into the quarry itself.  This entrance also provides a great training area as part of the cage is 3 metres deep and gives a very protected environment for basis skills practice.

The other entry option involves a giant stride and a 3m drop to the water.  It is obligatory to shout "Geronimo" as you fall.  Point are awarded for size of splash.

Training platforms have been built at 6m and 9m but apart from that, the quarry is pretty much as it was when abandoned in 1960 with huts and vehicles still in situ.

Access is via the Padarn country park.  Park in the large car park in front of the Welsh National Slate Museum (free entry - good cafe, but you're not welcome in a soggy diving suit).  Parking fee £4.

Drop your kit off at the dive centre to your right as you come in then font a parking space near the toilets.  There is a beige Portakabin here which are the changing rooms for the dive centre.

Entry fee to dive is currently £10 with £15 annual membership but check their website for details  https://viviandivecentre.com/
