Me Mike and the Lionfish

Didn’t want to get too close to this one!

I initially joined the Golden Lion SAC with a view of just getting a bit of experience to enable me to try diving on an upcoming holiday to St Lucia. I never intended to take it up as a hobby and always thought it would be too expensive to get into.

How things have changed since then! The club made me feel welcomed and it wasn’t long before my Brother and Mum also joined the club. Both my brother and I are now Ocean Divers and are working towards Sports Diver with a view of enjoying some more diving around the UK and the world.

I have come to learn that the club has members that enjoy all different aspects of diving be it photography, wreck diving or tropical diving and that there is a huge wealth of knowledge and experience available.

I really didn’t think that diving quarries in the UK would be very enjoyable, but every time I have been, I have enjoyed every minute.

The costs were also something that I need not have worried about as it can be expensive or as cheap as you want. There is plenty of second-hand kit available and you don’t need everything straight away, I am still building on the kit I have now just buying what I can when I can. To get your qualifications the only thing you really NEED is a dry suit, as the club heave everything else available to loan to members at a reasonable price. I would advise though getting your own mask and snorkel at an early stage as you will get a much better fit.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my diving experience so far and can’t wait to see some more of the sites around the UK that I am told so much about.
